Voltage Optimisation is an established, reliable and cost-effective way to reduce energy consumption, either for an entire building or on a specific asset such as a larger motor, compressor or chiller.
Watford Control has been manufacturing Voltage Optimisers for over 77 years and is the UK's leading manufacturer - now part of JMS Transformers Limited, we have two UK factories and over 50 staff.
The simple concept behind Voltage Optimisation is that the UK energy grid has to oversupply most people and businesses with high voltages, to ensure that no one is undersupplied with low voltages.
This means that the voltage supply from your transformer will be much high than you need, and this not only wastes energy and therefore money, but also reduces the lifespan of your electrical equipment.
Typically, the UK supply voltage is around >240V, whereas your equipment can operate at much lower levels of 220V, so, by simply reducing your incoming voltages and balancing your phases, you can save around 5% to 9% annually, and then potentially double* that saving to 18% with our PowerMap™ energy monitoring software.
PowerMap™ enables you to identify and target energy waste in real time, by alerting you to excessive energy consumption which is outside of your normal use. Like most businesses, you probably get your energy bill about 10 days after the end of the month, so any excess consumption is almost impossible to identify, until it's too late to do anything about it.
By being able to track your historic energy consumption (down to individual phase level) anywhere from 10 minutes to one year, you'll soon identify energy waste patterns and behaviours that simply eat into your bottom line.
As the saying goes "the easiest energy you can save is the energy you waste!"
Watford Control's Voltage Optimisation solutions can be acquired in two ways, every site is different of course, but essentially our commitment is as follows:
Outright purchase offering a guaranteed two-year or better ROI
Leasing programme - self-funding the system through the energy savings made
The principle behind the annual lease programme is that it allows customers to benefit from a self-funding option, covering the cost and installation of the Voltage Optimiser, by paying quarterly lease rentals instead, which are in turn offset by the savings in energy costs.
As the UK manufacturer of this technology, Watford Control guarantees that the cost of the annual energy savings will always be much greater than or equal the equipment annual costs, giving you a net gain of thousands of £ each year, and if it ever drops below, we will refund you the difference.
Developed in conjunction with our unique Voltage Optimiser technology, PowerMap™ allows customers to continually monitor and review, in real-time, their energy consumption and therefore identify not only savings achieved through the system, but also when and where you waste energy.
In addition to real-time reporting and monitoring, the PowerMap™ system can be automatically set to notify you with alarms for excess energy consumption or voltage and power anomalies, along with automated reports, like sending weekly energy consumption to the finance function to make comparisons against that week's business performance - say for example against production volumes (in a manufacturing environment) or occupancy levels for in hotel/leisure sector.
Traditionally, businesses receive their energy bills around 10 days after the month end, by that time any understanding of wasted energy or excess consumption are long gone, making it impossible to effectively manage your energy use.
Voltage Optimisation is the most established and reliable method of energy saving across an entire business operation or building, and while the advent of LED lighting and Variable Speed Drives (voltage independent devices) have reduced the scope of the savings that can be achieved, this has been more than offset by a 300% rise in energy costs in the last few years - and while costs are stabilising, they will continue to rise over the next decade as the Government funds the drive to Net Zero.
So, although the vast majority of businesses will benefit from Voltage Optimisation, the types of loads, business operating hours, energy waste reduction measures and voltage levels will all have an impact on the energy and cost savings potential.
